Interesting winner for the photo of the year compared to some of the others that were submitted.  The composition and "luckiness" of the shot is, in my opinion, the reason that it won.  The 10-year-olds winner is a more impressive shot in the way the humming bird is in focus with the flower coupled with the correct shutter speed.  The marmot and the coyote is a great example of pull the trigger and you never know what the result will be.  In this case, a photo of the year.

Being young, traveling can be hard and Ariel combats this by shooting around his house and surrounding areas.

The first photo is a little under exposed but could be saved with about half a stop of light in post. F2.8  iso 200 1/400 The second photo is what I would consider correctly exposed with the leaves in focus at f2.8 iso 200 1/200. A little bit of motion blur is present in the leaves at 1/200 Third is under exposed with a higher f-stop where more of the leaves are in focus. Leaving iso at 200 and shutter at 1/400 it is visibly darker at f5.6 with more in focus. Fourth photo brings everything together with a shallow depth of field and no motion blur while being correctly exposed. F2.8 iso 400 1/400.
